Low Cost Pasteurization Indicator
Maintaining a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius for ** minutes is all that is needed to achieve thorough pasteurization. Since water does not boil until 100 degrees Celsius, an visual and/or audible cue to determine when pasteurization has been achieved would allow users to save large amounts of heat energy without having to constantly consult a thermometer.
SunSmile is currently investigating the use of Jartherm, a thermo-sensitive gel polymer. The polymer is insoluble in any solvent and highly water absorptive at temperatures below a set temperature. In our case, that temperature would be set at just above 60 degrees Celsius. At 60 degrees and higher, the polymer releases its absorbed water and becomes a powder.
