Humanity is beautiful and wondrous. I am overwhelmed with gratitude to live in the place and time I do, with access to the wealth of knowledge and invention we have all inherited from past generations.
As a result of our rich inheritance, we have the largest number of healthy, educated people in history. Human beings in developed countries have tripled their average life span. We are able to communicate with any place on earth, instantly or travel there in a matter of hours.
There is in us the potential accomplish great things. Hopefully, we are not finished yet.
Free markets and intellectual property rights have allowed a large amount of innovation to be self-financing but, they have not been a cure all.
Many of our better ideas remain stranded in theory and some of those that have been implemented, have been done so with little regard to their impact on other systems. For much of the world, life is still far more complicated and less productive than it need be. Our environment is suffering. Democracy is difficult due to rampant illiteracy. In many places, 51% of the people living there are still considered property. Human beings still go hungry or die of simple diseases. Wars are waged for control of commodities that are not inherently limited. There are grotesque numbers of wasted lives; their potential, lost to all of us.
I believe it does not have to be so.
There is always another way to approach any barrier. If one is persistent enough, flexible enough, its weaknesses will be found.
